Vacations are supposed to feel like a break from our normal lives. A break from routines, responsibilities, and yes… sometimes even structure.
But if you’ve been building momentum with your nutrition, it’s normal to feel a little conflicted about dropping that structure while you’re away.
The good news is, there’s a happy balance between following your nutrition plan and letting it totally go out the window.
With my clients, I don’t look at vacation as a time to be “perfect” or “off-plan.” I see it as an opportunity to practice flexibility, build confidence, and prove to yourself that your habits can travel with you.
Plan for What Actually Matters
Before your trip, ask yourself: “What food experiences are truly worth it?”
Most trips will have a “must-have”. A planned night out, a bakery, a restaurant, or a local specialty. The goal isn’t to avoid those, we want to prioritize them intentionally.
A few ways to approach it:
Look up menus ahead of time (most are online now)
Pre-log meals when possible
Decide what you really want instead of saying yes to everything
Remember, you don’t need everything, you just need the things that are worth it to you.
Bring Your Non-Negotiables
Hitting nutrition goals (especially protein!) on the road can be tricky. Set yourself up by packing easy staples that can help fill in the nutrition gaps in your day.
Protein powder or ready-to-drink shakes
Protein bars or jerky
Travel-friendly snacks you already trust
Bringing some snacks and protein heavy items with you will help reduce your decision fatigue and ensure you at least have your protein handled. Once you have that, everything else becomes more flexible.
Upgrade Your “On-the-Go” Choices
Airports and convenience stops have lots of quality choices. We just need to look for them!
You can almost always find items like:
Greek yogurt
Pre-made protein boxes
Fresh fruit
Salads with grilled protein
Even macro-friendly fast casual options
The key is to pause and game plan before defaulting to grabbing whatever is easiest. Take stock of the options and choose the best one to meet your needs. This small amount of awareness goes a long way, and helps you feel better throughout your trip.
Shift From Tracking Perfectly to Tracking Intelligently
I always remind clients that nutrition on vacation will look different than nutrition while on vacation. And… that’s okay!
Instead of aiming for perfection or for things to look just like the do a home aim for informed flexibility. This might include estimating portions, loosely tracking, or relying on intutive eating. Long term success isn’t about perfection, it’s about navigating real life situations while keeping nutrition in the forefront.
Keep Your “Nutrition Rocks”
While traveling we’re focusing less on rigid rules and more on those big rocks of nutrition. Those are the simple habits that help build the foundation of wellness. Hydration, protein, movement, and high quality food! Focusing on these give you structure without taking over your trip.
Don’t Let One Meal Become a Spiral
One of the biggest mistakes I see with my clients is when one meal goes off track, we have the tendency to throw our hands up and convince ourselves that we’ve already “ruined it”.
Remember, one meal will not stop or derail progress. However the “I’ve ruined it” mindset will for sure knock you off course.
Instead of thinking:
“I already messed up…”
Shift to:
“I made a choice—now I’m moving forward.”
Practice Mindful Eating
Mindful eating, or intuitive eating is a real skill. It’s something not everyone learns early in life and changing that relationship with food takes time and practice! Vacation is actually one of the best times to slow down, listen to your body and actually enjoy your food.
Mindful eating means you’re eating without distractions, really paying attention to how your food tastes and stopping when you’re satisfied rather that when you’re stuffed.
I find most clients don’t practice this skill at home. Vacation it a perfect time to try it out.
Remember What Vacation Is Really About
Lastly, I urge clients to remember that your progress isn’t defined by a few days away from routine. Vacations and time away are about spending that time with people you care about. Exploring new places, and creating memories. Nutrition while on vacation shouldn’t take away from any of that!
